Yhdysvallat rahoitti Kiinan koronavirustutkimuksia. Apuraha oli ohjattu wuhanilaiselle tutkimuslaitokselle voittoa tavoittelemattoman amerikkalaisen EcoHealth Alliance -tutkimusjärjestön kautta.

Koronaviruksen mahdollinen labraperäisyys kiirehdittiin leimaamaan salaliittoteoriaksi Lancetissa 19.2.2020 julkaistussa kirjeessä, joka paljastui myöhemmin kirjeessä mainittujen huolestuneiden tiedemiesten sijaan EcoHealth Alliance -tutkimusjärjestön johtajan laatimaksi:

“We stand together to strongly condemn conspiracy theories suggesting that COVID-19 does not have a natural origin,” a group of virologists and others wrote in the Lancet on February 19, 2020, when it was really far too soon for anyone to be sure what had happened. Scientists “overwhelmingly conclude that this coronavirus originated in wildlife,” they said, with a stirring rallying call for readers to stand with Chinese colleagues on the frontline of fighting the disease.

Contrary to the letter writers’ assertion, the idea that the virus might have escaped from a lab invoked accident, not conspiracy. It surely needed to be explored, not rejected out of hand. A defining mark of good scientists is that they go to great pains to distinguish between what they know and what they don’t know. By this criterion, the signatories of the Lancet letter were behaving as poor scientists: They were assuring the public of facts they could not know for sure were true.

It later turned out that the Lancet letter had been organized and drafted by Peter Daszak, president of the EcoHealth Alliance of New York. Daszak’s organization funded coronavirus research at the Wuhan Institute of Virology. If the SARS2 virus had indeed escaped from research he funded, Daszak would be potentially culpable. This acute conflict of interest was not declared to the Lancet’s readers. To the contrary, the letter concluded, “We declare no competing interests.”

Virologists like Daszak had much at stake in the assigning of blame for the pandemic. For 20 years, mostly beneath the public’s attention, they had been playing a dangerous game. In their laboratories they routinely created viruses more dangerous than those that exist in nature. They argued that they could do so safely, and that by getting ahead of nature they could predict and prevent natural “spillovers,” the cross-over of viruses from an animal host to people. If SARS2 had indeed escaped from such a laboratory experiment, a savage blowback could be expected, and the storm of public indignation would affect virologists everywhere, not just in China. “It would shatter the scientific edifice top to bottom,” an MIT Technology Review editor, Antonio Regalado, said in March 2020.

We have watched as the scientists, public health professionals, and medical professionals of China, in particular, have worked diligently and effectively to rapidly identify the pathogen behind this outbreak, put in place significant measures to reduce its impact, and share their results transparently with the global health community. This effort has been remarkable.

We sign this statement in solidarity with all scientists and health professionals in China who continue to save lives and protect global health during the challenge of the COVID-19 outbreak. We are all in this together, with our Chinese counterparts in the forefront, against this new viral threat.

The rapid, open, and transparent sharing of data on this outbreak is now being threatened by rumours and misinformation around its origins. We stand together to strongly condemn conspiracy theories suggesting that COVID-19 does not have a natural origin. Scientists from multiple countries have published and analysed genomes of the causative agent, severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), and they overwhelmingly conclude that this coronavirus originated in wildlife as have so many other emerging pathogens. This is further supported by a letter from the presidents of the US National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine and by the scientific communities they represent. Conspiracy theories do nothing but create fear, rumours, and prejudice that jeopardise our global collaboration in the fight against this virus. We support the call from the Director-General of WHO to promote scientific evidence and unity over misinformation and conjecture.

We want you, the science and health professionals of China, to know that we stand with you in your fight against this virus.

The emails obtained via public records requests show that EcoHealth Alliance President Peter Daszak drafted the Lancet statement, and that he intended it to “not be identifiable as coming from any one organization or person” but rather to be seen as “simply a letter from leading scientists”.

The scientists’ letter appeared in The Lancet on February 18, just one week after the World Health Organization announced that the disease caused by the novel coronavirus would be named COVID-19.

The 27 authors “strongly condemn[ed] conspiracy theories suggesting that COVID-19 does not have a natural origin,” and reported that scientists from multiple countries “overwhelmingly conclude that this coronavirus originated in wildlife.” The letter included no scientific references to refute a lab-origin theory of the virus. One scientist, Linda Saif, asked via email whether it would be useful “to add just one or 2 statements in support of why nCOV is not a lab generated virus and is naturally occuring? Seems critical to scientifically refute such claims!” Daszak responded, “I think we should probably stick to a broad statement.”

Growing calls to investigate the Wuhan Institute of Virology as a potential source of SARS-CoV-2 have led to increased scrutiny of EcoHealth Alliance. The emails show how members of EcoHealth Alliance played an early role in framing questions about possible lab origin of SARS-CoV-2 as “crackpot theories that need to be addressed,” as Daszak told The Guardian.

Although the phrase “EcoHealth Alliance” appeared only once in The Lancet statement, in association with co-author Daszak, several other co-authors also have direct ties to the group that were not disclosed as conflicts of interest. Sekin tässä on outoa että miten nopeasti Wuhaniin rakentui heti koronasairaala ja muutenkin valmiudet viruksen torjuntaan.

En olisi uskonut mutta kyllä Trump oli oikeassa. Virus on aivan takuulla tehty wuhanilaisessa laboratoriossa.

Kehtaan epäillä kokonaisuutta. Yhdestä tieteellisestä tutkimuksesta tänä keväänä muistelen, että oli käytetty sananvalintaa "virusta on pitänyt muokata, jotta se saataisiin tarttumaan hiiriin". Löytyy jostain aiemmilta sivuilta enkä todellakaan jaksa enää etsiä sitä. Tämä viittaus koski eteläafrikan varianttia. Eli se, mikä aikanaan karkuutettiin, oli se sitten vahinko tai ei, niin on sen jälkeen jo monessa monessa eri labrassa saanut sitä sun tätä kohtelua osakseen.

Mielenkiintoista. Mikä järjestö tämä EcoHealth Alliance oikein on? Kuka sitä rahoittaa? Mikä järjestön motiivi tälle julkilausumalle on?

Vaikuttaa siltä, että Sars-Cov-2 (Covid-19 taudin aiheuttava virus) oli aluksi vähemmän vaarallinen kuin Sars-Cov-1, mutta paljon helpommin leviävä. Mutta ajan myötä Sars-Cov-2 muuntuu rajusti, nyt meillä on jo Intian variantti Suomessa, siitä variantista sanotaan että se leviää helpommoin kuin alkuperäinen sars-cov-2 mutta on myös tappavampi ainakin maailmalla. 

Tämä Sars-cov-2 on arvaamaton, emme voi tietää mitä se keksii seuraavaksi. Se on kumminkin SARS -virus.

Koska oikeastaan ei voi menettää mitään kokeilemalla kefiriä, jokainen longcovidoireista kärsivä voisi aivan hyvin kokeilla vaihtaa ruokavalioonsa kefiriä. Jos siitä vaikka saisikin jotain apua:

Eniten kiinnostaa tietää, miten tämä virus käyttäytyy elimistössä pidemmällä tähtäimellä. Mitä se tekee meidän immuunipuolustukselle? 

Olen samaa mieltä noista opportunistisista infektioista...

HI-viruksen myötä ne tulivat esiin vuosien päästä, kun hi-virus oli saanut tuhottua valkosolujen toimintaa riittävästi.

Miten käyttäytyy sars2? voidaanko puhua jo sars2 -viruksesta koska sitähän se on jo. Ei ihmiset ymmärrä covid-19 vaarallisuutta. 

Jääkö tämäkin uinumaan, kunnes se hyökkää. En usko, koska tämä ei ole kumminkaan hi-virus. Mutta sen sijaan meillä on systeeminen koronavirus, joka hyökkää jokaiseen kudokseen oli se sitten sydän tai alveoli keuhkoissa. Sen vuoksi tämä on paljon vaarallisempi kuin perus "flunssakorona"
