Let's speak English

Vierailija
11.01.2014 |

I'd like to see if any of you are able to have a decent conversation in English. Not that it would be possible here no matter what language we use but let's give it a go and see if we're any better than the ones we're making fun of.

No responses yet. All the mamas are too busy looking up words on Google Translate.

They've been probably too busy making babies instead of learning foreign languages.

There is that difference between me and mamas that I didn´t manage to get any babies, so I had time to learn more english.

True, the thread didn't work out as I thought it would. Surely it would have been easier with a topic like vaccines, cloth diapers or that you-know-who-blogger...

This is pretty funny. I can easily pick out the native speakers here and OP is defintely not one of them. :D

Non-native speakers trying to speak slang sounds painful, don't do it you are only embarrassing yourself. I do, however, totally encourage you to try and speak another language properly, the Finns are way too shy about this. Very few people will judge you for genuinely trying. But please leave the slang alone.
OP here.

Just like I excepted. On AV, there's no such thing as good English. That's for sure. Today I had a lunch with my British co-workers and it's obvious you'd been in trouble - big time. I guess you're English is fluent enough to order potatoes and meatballs during your Canaria trips but for anything else... just no. Nice try.
And what is your point again? If you just want to brag, or try to prove that you have such amazing skills, I guess this is the wrong place. Talk with your colleagues in case they still enjoy your collegial company... A mean, selfish and bragging colleague, just a perfect one

Error #1: Expected, not excepted.

Error #2: On the AV, not on AV, most Finns have trouble with when to add the "the" and you're one of them

Error #3: You'd have been in trouble, not you'd been in trouble

Error #4: Your english, not you're english

Sorry, honey, but get the hell out of here with your mediocre english. Why the f brag about something you don't know how to do? Talk about awkward and embarrassing.

It's just "Finns", not "the Finns" in generic reference, sweetie.

Are there any native English speakers on here right now?

Folks, English is a language with tons of idioms and such. It's not as easy as it seems. So don't brag unless you're native or at least half-native! I make mistakes all the time so I don't consider myself an expert either.

I would say "the Finns", in colloquial American english, sweetie. :)

I agree.

I'd consider myself half-native at least, having lived half my life in Finland and half my life (15 years) in the US. And I'd never consider myself an expert in either language. You can be a native speaker and not know all the rules and make mistakes for sure.
