Auroras are the result of disturbances in the magnetosphere caused by solar wind. These disturbances are regularly strong enough to alter the trajectories of charged particles in both solar wind and magnetospheric plasma. These particles, mainly electrons and protons, precipitate into the upper atmosphere 

The resulting ionization and excitation of atmospheric constituents emits light of varying color and complexity. The form of the aurora, occurring within bands around both polar regions, is also dependent on the amount of acceleration imparted to the precipitating particles. Precipitating protons generally produce optical emissions as incident hydrogen atoms after gaining electrons from the atmosphere. Proton auroras are usually observed at lower latitudes.

Northern lights/Southern lights happen when solar winds bring particles from the sun to earth's upper atmosphere and magnetic field and they ionisate and burn. It usually happens near the poles because the magnetic field is strongest there.

When it is extremely cold, there will be colors in the sky. Google aurora borealis.

0/5. Revontulet tuntee jokainen. Ne ovat joku maaginen juttu, kun lähes kaikki puhuu niistä (kiinalaiset eritoten!).

Here in Finland we have these things called fox fires  (so almost like that browser firefox - easy to remember). Foxes are running in the sky with tails on fire. Don't try this at home with your dog. Very dangerous.

Niitä näkyy myös eteläisellä pallonpuoliskolla lähellä etelänapaa. Siellä ne ovat tosin nimeltään aurora australis eli eteläntuli.

Tuo on vanhan kansan myytti, että revontulet vaativat pakkasen näkyäkseen. Sivistä itseäsi, ettet syötä lapsillesi puppua.
