Police are investigating a possible sighting of missing four-year-old Madeleine McCann in Morocco.

A Norwegian woman, who was holidaying in the north African country with her British husband, says she saw a little girl fitting Madeleine’s description at a petrol station.

Mari Olli, 45, who lives in Fuengirola on Spain’s Costa del Sol, was in Marrakech a week ago when she saw the child she thinks Madeleine.

Norwegian Ms Olli, 45, made the sighting over a week ago but did not realise its possible significance until she returned home with her British husband.

She said: " I didn' t know anything about Madeleine' s disappearance at the time, but now I' m more and more sure that the girl I saw was her."

The incident happened at around 10am on Wednesday, May 9, at a petrol station next to the Ibis Palmeraie Hotel on the outskirts of Marrakech.

Ms Olli said: " My husband was filling the car, and I went in the shop to buy some water. That' s when I saw her - my attention was drawn straight to her.

" She was a sweet, blonde-haired girl with a very cute face. She was wearing blue pyjamas with a little pink-and-white pattern, maybe flowers, on her top."

Ms Olli said she was struck by the little girl.

" She was standing alone with a man about a metre from her. She looked sad and a little lost. She looked so alone, I wanted to carry her or something.

" It struck me as a very unusual situation. It was very strange to see a little girl with light skin and very, very blonde hair standing alone in Morocco.

" If you' re with a small child you would normally normally hold her in your arms tight. But the man didn' t look like her father."

She described the man as aged between 35 and 40, with dark brown hair, not very tall, and English-looking.

" Later I thought he was from the UK, because the girl spoke English.

" I tried to listen to her. She looked at me and then spoke to him. She said something like ' Can I see mummy soon?' . I don' t think the man responded.

" He was quite anonymous-looking, wearing a baggy T-shirt and jeans and carrying a rucksack that looked like it was empty. He didn' t smile."

Ms Olli said he looked away when he saw her. " There were no other children with him. He turned away and looked at the shelves when the girl asked him the question."

Ms Olli had been holidaying in Morocco with her husband Raymond Pollard, 56, who is originally from Groby, in Madeleine' s home county of Leicestershire.

The couple did not hear about Madeleine' s disappearance until they got home the next day when they saw the news.

She immediately contacted police in Spain and Portugal and the UK Police National Missing Persons Bureau - but she has heard nothing since.

The former care worker said: " While we were on holiday we had a TV in our hotel room. I think I had seen Madeleine' s picture, but the sound was off.

" At the petrol station I wanted to tell my husband what I had seen there, but we were stressed trying to reach the ferry from Tangiers in time.

" I forgot afterwards - and now I' m kicking myself. At 6pm the next day I turned on the news in Spain got a real shock, because it was definitely her.

" All that evening I was physically sick. I was calling all the police, but no-one wanted to talk to me. I was phoning the Spanish police about 20 times.

" We then phoned Leicestershire police, who took my report and said it was a ' very strong observation' . But since then nobody has phoned me back."

Ms Ollie says she is in a terrible state. " My palms are sweating now. My heart is beating fast. I have had problems sleeping ever since, because I' m 99.9 per cent certain I saw Madeleine.

" It' s a nightmare. I feel I should have done something, that I should have looked after that girl in some way.

" She looked so sad and so alone."

Madeleine has been missing since May 3

Ms Olli has two children, Emma, 17, and 23-year-old Rudi. She has lived in Spain for two years and has been married for Mr Pollard for a year and a half.

Her husband, a locksmith, said: " She is adamant the girl was Madeleine. She is absolutely convinced it was her. But we have heard nothing."

Leicestershire police, who are working with the Portuguese, said it could not confirm any lines of inquiry being pursued in the search for Madeleine.

A force spokeswoman said: " We are passing on all the information we receive to the Portuguese police, and they will do with it what they think best."

News of the possible sighting emerged just a day after Madeleine' s family admitted for the first time that they no longer think she is in Portugal.

Her aunt Philiomena revealed their belief that she had been taken out of the country in an email to well-wishers supporting the search for her.

She said: " We don' t believe Madeleine is in Portugal any more and need to get her picture and the story across Europe as quickly as possible.
