Anyone who can tell me something about Algeria`s family law?

Is it common to have more than one wife in Algeria? Is there differences between cities and villages? What young people think about it? Is it old-fashioned to marry more than one?

I remember that I have read about Algerian`s family law, which is established in 1984 (if I remember right). I suppose that this family law is based on islam. I have an idea that there`s no sharia-law in Algeria `cos government want`s to be secular. Often government officials even adverse to everything conserning to islam (for example in Turkey, where the hijab is prohibited in most workplaces) Thought there are many religious things mixed in law. Isn`t it confusing?

Why are they acting like this?

but differences between peoples in Algeria are huge. There are lots of very secular Algerians, who don' t practise islamic faith and, naturally, don' t take more than one wife.

Besides, there are tens of different peoples in Algeria. Some are more relogious than others. For example berbers are quite secular.

Many Algerians have studied in France for historical reasons, and have therefore very " European" customs.
