When looking for playground sand for your child’s sandbox, look for silica free sand.



The majority of play sand found in stores is not natural sand but contains sand that is mined from quartz and contains crystalline silica. If enough silica is inhaled, it can increase the risk of cancer.



In California, sand that contains crystalline silica carries the warning:



“This product contains crystalline silica which is ‘known to the State of California to cause cancer and other substances which are known to the State of California to cause cancer, birth defects and reproductive harm”



The Environmental Protection Agency has a report on the Health Effects of Inhaled Crystalline and Amorphous Silica.



Silicosis is a lung disease caused by breathing dust with crystalline silica particles (industry workers). The dust can cause scar tissue formations that reduce the lungs' ability to work.



So... choose silica free sand for your child’s sandbox and decrease the risk of lung damage from regular store bought sand!!
