Police are scaling down the search for three-year-old Madeleine McCann after admitting they are no closer to finding her.

Detectives said the hunt had entered its ' final phase' a week after Madeleine went missing from her family' s holiday apartment as her parents dined at a nearby restaurant.

Chf Insp Olegario Sousa said CCTV footage of a child matching Madeleine' s description, with a woman and two men at a petrol station, was being studied. But he added that there were ' countless' theories about her disappearance.

There was also a possible sighting in Spain, where police sealed off a village near Seville.

Officers have scoured more than 200sq km (77sq miles) without any success. Clothes found near where Madeleine went missing, in the Algarve resort of Praia Da Luz, were not hers, officers confirmed.

Mr Sousa said: ' All the areas that have been covered until now, and all the places that have been checked, the results have been zero.'

Madeleine' s parents, Kate and Gerry, were interviewed by police again yesterday but Mr Sousa said they were not suspects.

Mr and Mrs McCann attended church on Wednesday to pray for Madeleine.

Brian Kennedy, the missing girl' s great-uncle, said from the family' s home in Rothley, Leicestershire: ' As the days go by it gets worse. My wife spoke to Kate yesterday and she was in a pretty distressed state.'

Phil Neville, captain of Everton FC, who Madeleine supports, said everyone at the club was ' hoping and praying' for her safe return.
