The troubled mental and physical journey of Natascha Kampusch, the Austrian girl kidnapped and held for eight years in an underground dungeon, was underlined this weekend when she talked of her desire to cut all her hair off and look like a man.
Kampusch was 10 when she was snatched off a street by Wolfgang Priklopil on her way to school and imprisoned in a 9ft by 6ft cell at his fortified home. She marked the ninth anniversary of the abduction with an interview in Germany' s Die Aktuelle magazine, expressing a wish radically to alter her image, the subject of public fascination around the world.

' I want to cut all my hair off, so I would look like a man,' she said. ' As a man you do not attract so much attention.'
The magazine ran a headline, ' Natascha no longer knows who she can trust' , adding that at her 19th birthday party two weeks ago ' she was smiling among her guests - but also looked badgered and scared. Why is no one in her army of psychiatrists, therapists, lawyers and media experts seeing that the girl needs help? Who benefits from whom?'
The birthday was Kampusch' s first since she gained her freedom. She sat in the midst of 40 family and friends in a wine cellar near Vienna and was given gifts including a bedside lamp from her sister and a CD. She said: ' It is moving to celebrate again with my family and the people I love.' After a surprise reunion with three school friends, she said: ' I was so happy. We had a good time. They are all leading professional lives now.'
But the party also revived painful memories of birthdays spent as a prisoner. She recalled: ' I got presents. But they were rather compensation for what he did to me all year long. Wax crayons, paper. An electronic toothbrush. Useful things. I was allowed to cook or make a cake. Every birthday I had the same thoughts: another year older. Another year in here. But I don' t want to speak about that time, it strains me too much.'
The interviewer asked her how important memories were in the dungeon. Kampusch replied: ' Memories give me strength but are also draining at the same time.'
Since running away from her kidnapper' s house last August, after which Priklopil committed suicide, Kampusch has been trying to rebuild her relationship with her parents and the outside world. Concerns have been raised about her diet as she readjusts to freedom. She appeared in Austrian media recently clutching a tray of ' Natascha Kiss' doughnuts, filled with jam, chocolate and coconut, that were created by her father.
She weighed just 6st 8lb when she escaped - exactly her weight when she was kidnapped - but put on 20lb in the first month after her release.

se mitä hänen äidistään puhutaan, olisi totta :(. Järkyttävää.
...ei ole lähtökohdat olleet kaksiset sillä naisella. Tulee varmaan tarvitsemaan apua lopun ikäänsä.
