Martin Kelly, 43, was found slumped outside his home in west London on Tuesday night - a day after the couple's 10th wedding anniversary.

His widow Natascha McElhone, who starred in The Truman Show, Ronin and the American television series Californication, was told the news while filming in Los Angeles.

The 38-year-old immediately made plans to fly back to Britain with the couple's two children, Theodore, eight, and five-year-old Otis and will arrive tonight.

Mr Kelly went to America only last week to visit his family and had returned relaxed and happy. He had no known health problems and was "fit and healthy".

His death shocked the medical world and left leading plastic surgeons "reeling".

He was discovered by a doctor friend shortly after 10pm and as news spread, several senior surgeons gathered in the accident and emergency department at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital where he was taken, but nothing could be done.

Educated in Paris and at Winchester College in Hampshire before studying medicine at St Bartholomew's Hospital Medical School in London, Mr Kelly continued his surgical training in Oxford and London and became a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in 1993.

At the time of his death, he was a consultant craniofacial plastic surgeon at the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital and at the Royal Marsden Hospital in London.

During his career, he was awarded a travelling scholarship to carry out research in microsurgery and facial reconstruction at the Mount Sinai Hospital in New York, where he spent two years.

His widow, who was born in London and brought up in Brighton before studying at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art, is the step-daughter of media commentator Roy Greenslade.

They first met when she was just 15 and they fell in love 10 years later, marrying in France in May 1998.

Mr Greenslade said family, friends and colleagues were in "complete shock" at Mr Kelly's sudden death.

"He was a truly magnificent man as a surgeon, as a father and as a husband. As well as being a brilliant doctor, he painted, he wrote his own music as well as being a great sportsman. He was just terrific and a true Renaissance man."
