The system developed in ancient India. Early forms of the digits appear in Brahmi numerals (from around the 3rd century BCE onward, seen in inscriptions such as those of Ashoka). A full place-value decimal system (including zero as a placeholder and later as a number) matured in India between roughly the 5th and 7th centuries CE. Important contributions came from mathematicians such as Aryabhata and Brahmagupta.

Indian (Hindu) mathematicians and astronomers used these nine digits plus zero with positional notation. Arabs and Persians later adopted and refined the system. They themselves called the numbers “Hindu numerals” or “Indian numerals.”

In the 9th century, scholars such as the Persian mathematician al-Khwarizmi (who wrote On the Calculation with Hindu Numerals, c. 825) and al-Kindi explained and popularized the system in the Islamic world.
