Without My Daughter







The movie tells the story of Sayed Bozorg Mahmoody, an Iranian doctor from Teheran. The movie is a father' s story of his daughter and his hopes to meet the daughter again after 16 years of separation. Dr. Mahmoody, Moody, became world famous against his own will as his wife Betty Mahmoody wrote the book Not Without My Daughter in 1986.



The Hollywood movie based on the book premiered in 1991. The film featured Sally Field and Alfred Molina in leading roles. In the book, Betty Mahmoody wrote about the family' s move to Teheran, Iran in 1984. She fled the country one and a half years later. The relations between the United States and Iran were very difficult at that time. The shah that had sympathized with the American administration had been overthrown in the end of the 1970' s. In the beginning of the 1980' s students invaded the US embassy in Teheran and took dozens of American hostages.



A year ago President Bush declared Iran to belong among the " axis of evil" countries. The Mahmoody family is a victim of international politics but neither the years nor politics have faded the father' s love for his daughter. Without My Daughter has been filmed in Iran, the United States and Finland.
