The United States was first settled (by westerners, that is) by puritans, and religious conservatism has always been powerful here. Various revival movements in the 1800s strengthened that trend, leading to nationwide banning of prostitution and many other religiously - opposed activities. As late as the 1950s, it was illegal for doctors in Connecticut to discuss birth control with their patients. In addition, we have been quite militant and expansive for most of our history, with more years spent at war than not. However, no war has been fought on our soil for 150 years. The common folk think of war as something brave soldiers do "over there."

This is not the case in Europe. The devastation caused by the world wars was immense. Almost zero German cities were left standing after WWII, and many were burned to the ground, civilians and all. You can still see the mortar craters on some WWI battlefields 100 years later, and every building from before that time is pockmarked with shrapnel scars to this day. Everyone in Europe old enough to remember the war remembers it as a time of darkness and terror, when it seemed the world might end and take them all with it. The devastation is incalculable.

And God did not save them.

The power of religion was broken in Europe, by those wars. So many died, in such horrific ways, and so many prayers for peace, love, food went unanswered. With religion went sexual repression. Why should we revel in killing, they ask, when we could love while we have the chance? The continent reaped the spoils of war already.
