I am an American exchange student and I wonder why Finns are so...
Cold hearted, introverted and sad? It's like they never smile, nor do they talk to anyone else but their best friends. Is this all because of the cold climate or is it genetical?

We have had couple of very destroying war in our near-past, and those horrible times caused lots of trouble. Before those wars, and our independent moment, we were under the bigger nations, Russia and Sweden, and it has also let marks on us.
One of the most cold atmosphere started already about 1918 or even earlier, and that continued over 1940's. Neighbors even hated each other and nobody trusted anybody. You know those red and white-battles.. Then came the new war, and we started get closer as a nation again, because we had to fight against outer enemies together. But that civil war is still effecting nowdays, it has stacked in our national self-esteem. That is how I think.
And also there is cold, and DARK in winter.. I really hate that darkness, its always depressingin me down.
Sorry my English, haven't use for long time. 😀
Stop whining. In the united states of america, we are on war all the time. Still, we are very warm hearted and open people.
Hienosti löysit tiesti vauvapalstalle :)
I wonder if op is a good "mate" of Colum from Edinburgh.

Nämä "esitän ulkkaria ja "sattumalta" päädyn vauvapalstalle tekemään typeriä provoja"-aloitukset on NIIN wanha ja tylsä juttu. Keksikää jo jotain uutta, kiitos.
Joo.

Wait what, who even remembers some wars these days? Maybe older people do, but like I don't have any idea about them. If asked, I can say that there has been some war sometime in the past but I couldn't tell any details about it, let alone that it affected to my everyday life. I'm 22 years old.
By the way, did you know that the darkness comes every day in USA even in middle of summer? And I like darkness, it enables me to go out without anyone recognizing especially when I wear black clothes and cover most of my face with a scarf.
Finnish people just don't like to be very social like people in some other countries. It's a shock to meet "over social" people who wants constantly interact with and that tires me out pretty quickly.

Life in Finland is a battle. It start in the childhood. While you in the USA are able to use time to develop your happiness skills, we in Finland have to study not only our own major language (which by the way is about 500 times harder than English) but also Swedish and English. Then we grown a little bit and the older people say that its not enough! you have to study Russian or Germany or French or Spain. You do that all and remember nothing. And the winter is doing everything it can to harm you.
BTW, do anyone know similar forum than this in English? I have tried to search one to no avail. Of course there is a lot of different kind of forums but not one like this.
Sorry to tell you my Americann buddy, you folk is phony! We're maybe quiet and talk only when asked but you guys talk to much non sense...

Tarkotat siis kylmää foorumia täynnä sydämettömiä ihmisiä? Onhan noita paljonkin. Myös termit tulevat tänne usein ulkolaisilta foorumeilta.
Nice try, buddy! When you have been exposed to Hollyweird movies all your life you may have developed so called Americanism in your head. However, as you can see, the av mammas find out pretty darn easily when someone is trying to fake it.
menepä metroon niin kaikilla on katse tiukasti nauliintunut kännykään, ei hymyillä vieraille ihmisille. ei mitään.

Well, what would you do if you met foreign people? Would you give them compliments or berate them?
No one is going to say negative things face-to-face, almost everyone wants to be nice then but after that, anonymously on online forums it's easy to say what you are really thinking. If you meet some foreigner and they can say few words in Finnish, you will most likely praise them about it. But if you really needed to work with them in Finnish, your opinion would change really quickly and it would start irritate you.
