A GerMAN in Finland: Interested in a blog?

Vierailija
30.04.2016 |

Hi,
i am a 33 years old German who lives in Finland. A friend of mine said that i should/could start to write a blog.

What do you think?
What kind of content would be interesting in your opinion?

Opinions and suggestions appreciated.

Kiitos! ;-)

What kinda content have you been thinking about writing? Maybe about how it feels like to live in Finland as an "outsider"? How long have you been living here?

I rarely read blogs but I might be interested.

I am not sure. Maybe some kind of  "How a German sees Finland" kind of blog and of course other things all kind of things i have in mind. Normal life with a German touch. ;-) I have been here for over 5 years now.

That sounds interesting enough to me. If you decide to make this blog please give us the link.

How have you liked Finland so far?

Finland is great. But i.e. winter is too long, too cold and too dark. But people are great. Everwhere nature is one of the best things in Finland. Even in Helsinki i don`t really feel like beeing in a city to be honest.

I feel you. Long walks or camping in the forest during summer is the best thing ever. I know Helsinki is a small city when you think about bigger countries, but it is still too big and busy for me. I need my nature fix.

Tell me, how did you find this site? I mean, why are you asking about this blog thing in vauva.fi of all places?

I didn`t find this site. The friend that suggested me to start blogging maybe told me that this would be a place to ask and look what people think. She said that this is a busy place and topics for A-Z.

Yeah, this place is surely busy. With trolls. So I hope you understand we are all very skeptical.

If you truly are not a troll, make that blog. I'm sure you'll get readers.

Troll? Why should i be trolling? I said i am a normal German guy living in Finland. What´s wrong or strange about that? And what sense would it make to lie? Sounds a bit strange to me to be honest. Or maybe i don`t know about this site enough...

Nothing strange about that, but this site is strange and full of trolls. If you have been translating those comments written is finnish you'll see they are all about how you are trolling and they don't believe you are german.

I've been replying to you because there is a change you're not a troll and I want to read a blog about Finland in someone else's perspective.

If you understand German than you can have a look at www.saksalaiset.fi. That is not a blog but there you find a forum where germans are talking about things related to their lifes in finland.

But i still dont get why i should be trolling. I think this post shows now two things to me: this forum is a bit weird and the interest in this kind of blog wouldn`t be that big. I appreciate your interest but writing for a handfull of people whouldn`t make sense i think.

Frankly, I couldn't care less how a German sees Finland. Or anyone of any other nationality, for that matter. I think it's high time we got over ourselves and stopped wondering what other people think of us. Who the fuck cares??

Sadly, I have never studied German so I don't understand it.

I have been under the impression it is hard to get many readers in Finland for blogs so if you want a huge audience it might not be for you. Tho if you write in english you might get some readers outside of Finland.

I mainly read comic blogs and they don't have a huge audience but the ones that read them read every entry and talk to the bloggers a lot.

If i would write finnish it would take tooooo much time and even then it would be full of mistakes. Noone would be happy. And i have no interest in learning finnish. I tried it for a while but it is too difficult. I prefer to spend my time learning spanish rather than wasting it to learn finnish. Most of Finns speak good enough english and some speak even german.

By the way: Your politics here are really a mess. Germany and the rest of the world are also struggeling. But what i understand you are really on the wrong track here. Politics in Finland want/hope exports to grow? Really?  That`s a dream but not realistic. Your wages are by far too high and even if you cut 25% you have no chance on the global markets. But that`s another story.

And yes, our politics is a shitfest. But I don't think wages are the problem. The problem is our taxing and burocracy. Mainly taxing.

Imo imports are the problem. You need to change consumption here in finland. Finland is importanting too much unnecessary stuff other countries. That makes your country bleeding money. Better to hire a finnish personal trainer and a cleaner instead of buying a big flat tv from asia would help for example a lot. Thanks for your kind words by the way. ;-)

I must say I find it strange that someone who has lived in a country for five years and plans to stay longer should say learning the local language is a waste of time.

I 100% agree with you. Nice that even people outside sees what is wrong but our politicians are blind.

Anyway, I wont use my day talking about politics because it infuriates me. But it was nice talking to you. :) Have a great weekend!

There is really no big need at the moment to learn finnish. I get finnish news in english, finnish tv doesn`t dubb english and german tv shows, i can go to the doctor and there english is also no problem, i don`t need finnish for work, most of finnish people speak english. And i don`t know if i will stay here forever. So there is no real need or advantage of learning finnish for me. Espacially because finnish is so difficult. Spanish i.e. is very easy instead and would have more value for me and is much more interesting.

I dont want or need a huge audience. But i also don`t want to write to only a few people. We will se. Maybe i will give it a shot and start someting when i am bored or pissed.

Yeah, give it a shot. Don't give up straight away. If you make interesting content people will read.

Thanks for your kind words by the way. ;-)

I 100% agree with you. Nice that even people outside sees what is wrong but our politicians are blind.

Anyway, I wont use my day talking about politics because it infuriates me. But it was nice talking to you. :) Have a great weekend!

thx. same here. both opinions. ;-)

Clearly you don't understand the actual value of learning a new language, but it's your loss. What was your reason for moving to Finland?
