Joe Robinson, 19, from Clevedon School in Somerset, who is one of those diagnosed with swine flu, said: 'I feel fine, fit as a fiddle. But they have told me that I could be infectious despite of not showing any symptoms. I am receiving excellent mediacal attention.'



HOW SERIOUS IS THE THREAT?

last week the chief medical officer stunned many people by revealing the Government was preparing the emergency services for up to 65,000 deaths. But that figure is a worst case scenario. Many flu experts believe the true figure will be much lower.

Professor John Oxford, Britain's leading flu scientist, thinks the death toll could be as low as 6,000 - the same number killed by normal, seasonal flu each year.

'This appears to be the mildest pandemic in recent history,' he said yesterday.

'It doesn't seem to be affecting people over 65 who have protection from earlier strains of flu, while for many it has just led to mild symptoms.'

The truth is that no one can say with confidence how serious the pandemic will be.

But in America - where the pandemic is around four to six weeks ahead of the UK --there are signs that the number of cases is levelling out.
