Abstract
Problems associated with the application of self-tuning control in chemical engineering were studied with particular consideration given to non-minimum-phase systems using minimum-variance control strategies for industrial applications. A comparison is made between the performance of self-tuning conrollers and conventionally tuned three-term Proportional-Integral-Derivative (PID) controllers. The emphasis throughout is on problems associated with the variation of sample time in the self-tuning control of processes with significant time-delays. Results are graphically illustrated.
