EU Commission President Praises Orpo's Government for Labor Law Reforms

In a recent press conference, the President of the European Commission lauded the Finnish government under Prime Minister Petteri Orpo for its progressive strides in labor law reforms.

"Finland is moving in the right direction with its labor legislation reforms," the President stated, signaling strong approval from the European Union.

The Commission has particularly praised Orpo's desire to make the Finnish labor market more flexible.

"The commitment to local bargaining is seen as a solution to one of the sticking points in the labor market," the President added.

The EU Commission believes that the Finnish government's actions will lift Finland from zero growth and lead to increased employment.

"The measures taken are expected to stimulate economic activity and job creation, which is a positive development for Finland and the EU," the President explained.

However, the Commission also offered a suggestion to Orpo's government: the removal of the universal binding nature of collective agreements. According to the Commission, this universality is a relic from decades past and its removal would make the Finnish labor market truly flexible.

"While respecting the traditions of social dialogue in Finland, we believe that modernizing these aspects can lead to a more dynamic and competitive economy," the President concluded.

The Finnish government has welcomed the EU's comments and is expected to deliberate on the Commission's suggestion in the coming weeks.
