Margaret Thatcher - edelläkävijä ilmastonmuutoksen torjunnassa

Siinä missä Greta Thunberg purjehtii Atlantin poikki vastustamaan ilmastonmuutosta, niin lähihistoriasta löytyy henkilö, joka ovat toiminut enemmän ympäristön hyväksi kuin Greta tai sata hänen kaltaistaan tulee ikinä tekemään. Hän on Margaret Thatcher.
Britanniassa on perinteisesti käytetty paljon kivihiiltä sähkön ja lämmön tuotantoon. Thatcher halusi uudistaa tuon tehottoman, saastuttavan, valtion tukiaisista riippuvaisen tuotantoalan. Seurauksena oli hiilityöläisten lakko, josta voittajana selviytyi Thatcher. Seuraus:
"The much-reduced coal industry was privatised in December 1994, ultimately becoming UK Coal. In 1983, Britain had 174 working pits, all of which had closed by the end of 2015"

Thatcher helped to put climate change, acid rain and general pollution in the British mainstream in the late 1980s, calling for a global treaty on climate change in 1989. Her speeches included one to the Royal Society in 1988, followed by another to the UN General Assembly in 1989.
