Bulgarians Cook Swan Despite H5N1 Alert

Politics: 22 February 2006, Wednesday.

Villagers from southeast Bulgaria have captured a swan and tried to cook and eat it, despite recently confirmed cases of bird flu.

Two men from Bistra village, near Silistra, caught the bird and took it to their wives to cook, media revealed.

The two families were apparently undisturbed by the fact that Silistra' s wetlands were a shelter for thousands of migratory birds, and a region widely seen as bird-flu risky.

But veterinary experts carried out a check just in time to keep the four from eating up the cooked bird, media reported.

The meat was confiscated and buried into the ground, and the domestic poultry at the two homes had to be culled.

Anti-flu treatment and medical surveillance for ten days were prescribed to the four people.

Bulgaria' s first case of the human-threatening H5N1 strain of bird flu was confirmed in mid-February.

The authorities immediately published recommendations on how to avoid contacting the virus.

One of main points was not to come close to wetlands and wild birds, and to keep domestic poultry locked indoors.

So far, the virus seems to have spared domestic birds in Bulgaria, but a possible outbreak could pose a threat to humans.
